The discussion showed that to facilitate IEP it will be important to: adapt the mindset and culture of those engaged in the procurement process, strengthen the capacities and skills of procurement officers, and integrate the private sector early on in the process.

Through real-world examples of how Innovation Commons are being implemented in Karlstad and beyond, this episode allowed to understand how these Commons shaped industry development and provided valuable lessons, as well as created a shared resource pool, fostering early-stage innovation through collective action. The discussion emphasized the need for supportive policies to nurture these collaborative ecosystems.

On the first day of Innovation Zero, we explored how platforms can play a central role in creating the necessary dynamics to facilitate re-design, recycling and re-use of EV batteries, connecting stakeholders and increasing the efficient use of resources. We explored how circular platforms can transform the EV battery sector towards increased circularity, vital for the clean tech revolution. More information available here.

During the session, we dissected two pivotal case studies: 1) Scalability Success Story: explore how an innovative solution achieved remarkable scalability. 2) Unanticipated Challenges: understand why another initiative fell short of its scaling goals. We deciphered the lessons learned and to understand how Demand Acceleration as both a method and principle can facilitate scaling efforts and yield a wider impact.

It revealed that the circular transition is not only dependent on technological advancements and tools but also needs to consider the potential and need for market creation and human behavior. Based on the outcomes of the 15th session of the Team of Specialists on Innovation and Competitiveness Policies (ToS-ICP), international policy dialogue, this side-event brought together ETIN members and leading experts to discuss, explore and exchange experiences in strategic learning and experimentation for transformative innovation. Identified good practices and policy recommendations will be reported to the UNECE Committee on Innovation and Competitiveness Policies in spring 2024 and also feed into future ETIN activities under work theme 2.

Co-organized with the Regional Cooperation Council (RCC), this event brought together government officials, innovation agencies and leading experts on innovation with the aim to promote innovation-related collaboration among key stakeholders in the Western Balkans and the UNECE region and accelerate transformative innovation for sustainable development and economic growth, leveraging strategic learning and future-oriented thinking to anticipate and address upcoming challenges. The event is inspired by the success of the UNECE Sub-regional Innovation Policy Outlook (IPO), a UNECE flagship publication which provides a comprehensive assessment of innovation policies, identifying best practices and areas for improvement.

This event was organized at the margin of the Regional Forum for Sustainable Development 2023. Through a specifically designed agenda, and a process of mutual peer learning, this study tour helped advance ETIN members on the topic of strengthening the links between international and local transformative innovation stakeholders. Questions discussed included; How do we coordinate international initiatives with local activities? What are the specific policies and measures required to accelerate transformative innovation and entrepreneurial experimentation across geographical and institutional boundaries?
